Shiseido is one of the oldest cosmetic companies in the world, founded in Japan in 1872. The Shiseido philosophy states that true beauty is an outer reflection of the inner self. The company is the fifth largest cosmetic company in the world, with subsidiaries in nearly 65 countries. The company offers a wide range of skin care and cosmetic products, all sold in chic, modern packaging to reflect the updated, modern image of the company.

The Shiseido anti-aging products include the Bio-Performance line, which consists of a restoring cream, revitalize, whitening formula, eye contour cream, lifting formula, exfoliating discs and refining essence. For the purpose of this review, we will take a closer look at the formula of the restoring cream. After perusing the company website, we were unable to find customer testimonials or a money back guarantee policy for Shiseido. The products can be purchased at upscale department stores and through some of their websites. You cannot purchase products directly through the company websites, however.

Product Details

Unfortunately, we could not find a complete list of ingredients for any of the Shiseido products. This is a concern, since a lack of information about ingredients can mean skin irritation or an allergic reaction for those who have sensitivities to particular substances. The company website claims that the Bio-Performance Super Restoring Cream contains a patent-pending bio-restoring complex that will fill and firm lines and wrinkles. However, we do not know precisely what is in this complex.

Other listed ingredients in this Shiseido product include “hydro-elastinet”, which claims to provide a smooth, supple surface on the skin, and a “bio-enhancing shield” to help skin maintain youthfulness. We are not certain what these terms entail, since no specific substances are listed in the formula. We would be much more comfortable with ingredient lists that would provide more concrete information about what the products might do.

Most skin care experts will agree that the best ingredients for diminishing the look of fine lines and wrinkles are matrixyl, argireline, collagen or hyaluronic acid. For best results, a combination of these ingredients can be used. We were unable to determine if the Shiseido anti-aging line contained any of these substances.

The Good

  • The Shiseido company has a long history and reputation for quality.
  • The products are available online and through fine department stores.

The Bad

  • Complete ingredient lists are not available for these products.
  • We were unable to find customer testimonials or a money back guarantee policy for the Shiseido products.
  • The items are expensive.
  • The large number of products available from Shiseido could make it difficult for consumers to find the best anti-wrinkle treatment from the company.

The Bottom Line

While the Shiseido products may deliver what they promise, it is difficult to know for sure without information like ingredient lists, customer testimonials and clinical studies. The products are also very expensive, which means there is a risk involved in purchasing an item without knowing what is in the formula. We say proceed with caution when using Shiseido products as anti-aging treatments.

I am not sure what ingredients are in the bio performance skin lotion but I am definitely allergic to it. I noticed it the first day I started using it. Burning skin. Watery eyes. Headache. Stopped once I washed it off.

I should mention, having previously worked for Shiseido in a department store, they claim to be at the forefront of product development, and the first to combine Hayluronic acid with it’s creams, specifically the
Bio-performance line. The texture of all their products is fantastic, but heavy on fragrance. They have a cult following, especially regarding the eye creams and vintage product line. $50-$300
