Perlop Cosmetics has been around since 1927 and has developed their signature line of Concha Nacar (Mother of Pearl) products over many years. Perlop Cosmetics products are geared towards Latino women but the company states that women of all ethnicities can benefit from the products. Latino skin has a unique set of challenges including sun spots, blemishes and scars.

The main ingredient in the Perlop Cosmetic creams is oyster shell powder. According to the company, there is clinical evidence that oyster shell powder can have anti-aging and toning effects. We believe that if oyster shell powder was as powerful an anti-aging ingredient as stated, many other skin care manufacturers would be using it in their formulations. The Perlop Cosmetics product line consists of: Cream #1 (a night cream), Cream #2 (a daily moisturizer), Cream #3 (a bleaching cream), Vitamin A Cream, Vitamin E Cream, and Cleansing Cream. With so many formulations, we are left wondering why the company did not take the best ingredients in each and make a single effective anti-aging cream.

Product Details

We will focus on the Perlop Cosmetics Vitamin A Cream for this review as it is marketed as an anti-aging cream. According to the company’s website, the Vitamin A Cream contains: Vitamin A (as retinol), aloe vera, lanolin, and glycerin. A full ingredient list for this product does not seem to be available.

The benefits of Vitamin A when taken internally are well documented, however applying it topically does not have as much research to back it up. There are some studies that suggest that Vitamin A may have an anti-oxidant effect on the skin. The company’s claim that Vitamin A deeply penetrates the skin and smoothes wrinkles appears to be unsubstantiated. Aloe vera, lanolin and glycerin are all skin hydrators, suggesting that this cream may be a good moisturizer. However, as an anti-wrinkle formulation, we believe that it is missing some key ingredients, like collagen and hyaluronic acid. Those with skin allergies should be cautious of this product until they know how their skin will react with lanolin, which is a known allergen.

The Good

  • May contain effective moisturizers.
  • Solid company that has been in business over 80 years.

The Bad

  • Products may not contain proven effective anti-wrinkle ingredients.
  • No money-back guarantee offered.
  • Not able to purchase directly from the manufacturer.
  • Some products contain known allergens.

The Bottom Line

With so many skin care products on the market today claiming to eliminate wrinkles and restore youthful skin, it is important to sift through the marketing to determine what ingredients the product might contain that will fulfill the hype. Unfortunately, in the case of Perlop Cosmetics, we were not impressed with the active ingredients and we feel that consumers may not get the results they are looking for. Your best bet is to search for an anti-wrinkle formula that has the proven ingredients and research to back it up.
