With the flood of anti-aging products on the market today, some companies will try to rise above the competition with cutting-edge technology, new ingredients or a fresh approach to skin care. This appears to be the case with Suzanne Somers’ FaceMaster Toning System, which claims to temporarily reduce the signs of aging by stimulating and toning facial muscles. The premise for this treatment is that the aging process causes muscles to sag and lose tone, which leads to the signs of aging for the skin. By toning the muscles underneath, your skin can look smoother and younger as well.

The device is sold on the FaceMaster Toning System website and through some online retailers. It is also featured on the Home Shopping Network, where Somers is a frequent guest. This product is said to be designed by Somers and Peter G. Hansen M.D. The product website includes information about the system and how it works, customer testimonials, a 30-day money back guarantee and a celebrity endorsement from Somers. While a Hollywood name is enough to sell many on a skin care product like this one, we prefer to look specifically at the device to see if it can really deliver what it promises.

Product Details

The FaceMaster Toning System comes with two metal wands, a supply of foam caps, a two-ounce bottle of conductive solution, a step-by-step instructional DVD and a manufacturer’s one-year warranty. The machine runs on a nine-volt battery and sends a safe dose of currents to the skin to stimulate facial muscles, which will in turn tone them. According to the product website, the FaceMaster Toning System has been “cleared” by the FDA to use at home as a cosmetic device. We are interested to note that the website does not use the word “approved” when talking about the FDA endorsement, which is their typical seal of approval and safety for a product.

We were unable to find much evidence that this approach to anti-aging will be particularly effective. In light of the current cost of the FaceMaster Toning System, which is about $150 on the product website at the time of this review, we don’t believe that this product may offer consumers the best value for their anti-aging dollar. We do believe that there are many good topical solutions that have been designed for anti-aging purposes today. Formulas that contain proven ingredients like collagen, matrixyl, argireline and hyaluronic acid can produce positive results without the need for electronic devices like the FaceMaster Toning System.

The Good

  • The FaceMaster Toning System comes with a 30-day money back guarantee.

The Bad

  • There is not much evidence available to suggest that the FaceMaster provides the most effective treatment for anti-aging purposes.
  • The machine is expensive.
  • There is no topical solution included that contains proven anti-aging ingredients.

The Bottom Line

While we appreciate a company that tries to find an innovative approach to anti-aging treatments, we do not believe that there is any evidence to suggest that the FaceMaster Toning System will provide the results that it promises. We believe that consumers will find better benefits with a topical solution that contains proven anti-aging ingredients.
