Overview
After a company called GeneLink had done 10 years of research, it created Dermagenetics DNA UltraCustom. This is certainly a unique anti-aging skin care treatment; for it is based on your unique DNA. You just take a swab from your cheek, put it in a special envelope, and mail it off to the company's labs. Three or four weeks later, you receive in the mail a genetically-specific cream that Dermagenetics claims will: eliminate the formation of wrinkles; hydrate and firm up your skin; increase the production of elastin and collagen; eliminate age spots; and give your skin back its youthful "glow."
Product Details
The 30 mL bottle of Dermagenetics cream that you receive in the mail after the three or four week wait is targeted at your "SNPs or single nucleotide polymorphisms", according to the company website. Since this is a custom-designed anti-aging skin cream, you clearly cannot just run out and buy it from any drugstore or pharmacy. The cheek swab that you send in to the company will contain all of the information that the labs need to formulate and create your "perfect" anti-aging skin care solution.
This is a very expensive procedure: your 30 mL of cream costs you around $250. Also, the company seems to be in the midst of re-launching the product and may not be accepting new customers right now.
The Good
- If it is true that Dermagenetics can custom design a skin cream just for you based on your DNA, then this is a truly miraculous product (if it works), and it definitely gives new meaning to "customer service."
The Bad
- The price is steep to say the least.
- Let's hope that if this product works as advertised, there will not be frequent interruptions for "re-launches."
- There are no independent clinical studies or third-party testimonials to be found.
- There might be some people who are disturbed about some private company knowing their genetic information.
The Bottom Line
Dermagenetics DNA UltraCustom could just be the future of the cosmetic beauty industry. If this is an effective formula that is tailored specifically to you, then it would be very difficult to find anything better--and at these prices, it had certainly better be the best of the best. On the other hand, there will be some people who are deeply disturbed by the idea of their personal genetic information winding up in the files of a large private company--while there is probably nothing to fear from this, a bad apple at that company could decide to make use of the information for nefarious purposes. You might serve yourself best by first seeing if something that is more immediately available and less expensive can do the trick for you instead.
