Cosmedix stresses the importance of using pure ingredients for a superior anti-wrinkle formula. They claim that they can use a process known as “chiral correction” to bring substances to their purest form, which will reduce the risk of irritation and increase the effectiveness of these ingredients. Cosmedix offers a long line of products, with cleansers, masks, serums and exfoliators making up a large number of them. Some of these products are available to consumers and others can only be purchased by a physician. While this company doesn’t appear to offer a skin care line specifically geared toward anti-aging results, we were able to find two products that claim to work well on wrinkles and to bring the skin back to a more youthful appearance.

Cosmedix Defy is an exfoliating moisturizer that supposedly gives the skin a radiant glow and plumps and smoothes the complexion. Refine is defined as a retinoid treatment that repairs the appearance of fine lines and promotes the production of elastin and collagen. Both products should be applied to cleansed skin either morning or night, and the Defy formula can be used twice per day. It is recommended that Refine is only used every other day at first, until you see how your skin responds to the formula. This should be an indication to the consumer that the ingredients within the Refine formula are potentially harsh and very irritating to the skin.

Product Details

Refine contains a long list of ingredients, with retinol coming in at one of the top spots on the list. Retinol is very effective in exfoliating the skin, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines. However, this substance can also be very irritating, especially to those with sensitive skin. Another ingredient that we like to see in this Cosmedix product is sodium hyaluronate, an effective skin hydrator and moisturizer. What we did not see on the list was other proven anti-wrinkle ingredients like collagen, matrixyl and argireline, leading us to wonder if the formula is really potent enough to have the desired effect on lines and wrinkles.

Defy is another exfoliating product, using lactic acid to slough off dead skin cells and leave a smoother, more radiant surface underneath. However, lactic acid can be another irritating substance for those with sensitive skin and we wonder why Cosmedix ranks this product as safe for all skin types when potential irritation is a realistic possibility. This product also has a long ingredient list and proven wrinkle ingredients are conspicuously absent here as well. In fact, Defy does not even contain sodium hyaluronate, leading us to wonder if it will have any effect on wrinkles whatsoever.

The Good

  • The Cosmedix products are supposed to provide the purest ingredients for the most effective formulas.

The Bad

  • Leading, proven anti-aging ingredients are conspicuously absent from the formulas.
  • Some of the ingredients that are included are potentially irritating to some skin types.

The Bottom Line

If you are looking for an exfoliating experience, the Cosmedix anti-aging products might be the perfect choice for you. However, if wrinkles are your primary focus, there are more effective formulas available.
