Algenist Firming & Lifting Eye Gel is a small bottle of eye serum with quite a large price tag. For $68, the consumer receives a 0.5-ounce bottle, but the area being covered is small so there is some consolation there. The consumer reviews are all over the place though the majority of the reviews give the product three or more stars on several beauty company websites. The official website for Algenist offers just one five-star review, something the consumer cannot trust, because the company only profits from positive reviews. There are several concerns about irritated, dry skin brought up by consumers, which could be associated with some of the ingredients in the formula.

Product Details

Algenist Firming & Lifting Eye Gel openly lists all ingredient used in the formula. The company is proud to announce they do not use parabens, sulphates, phthalates and other concerning ingredients in the Algenist Firming & Lifting Eye Gel formula, but there is some ingredient in the formula that causes consumers with sensitive skin to notice dryness and irritation.

Caffeine is one of the main ingredients in the formula. Caffeine is commonly used in cellulite-reducing creams because it dehydrates the space between fat cells. We believe Algenist Firming & Lifting Eye Gel uses this ingredient to reduce eye puffiness. Caffeine will work for a short time to reduce puffiness, but eventually the water will return and so will the puffiness. Caffeine has diuretic properties, which could account for skin dryness and subsequent irritation after a few days or weeks of using the product.

Butylene glycol, the second ingredient in the formula behind water, could also be to blame. There is some concern that butylene glycol, when applied around the eyes, can cause skin irritation – as reported by some consumers.

The Good

  • We were able to find a complete list of ingredients for Algenist Firming & Lifting Eye Gel.
  • The caffeine will reduce puffiness, but only temporarily.

The Bad

  • Repeated use could cause skin irritation.
  • Caffeine is a diuretic – thus dry skin could develop around the eyes.

The Bottom Line

Algenist Firming & Lifting Eye Gel may cause irritation, especially in consumers with sensitive skin. There have been reports of red, dry patches forming around the eyes after a week or two of use. We believe the caffeine or butylene glycol could be responsible for this reaction. Consumers with sensitive skin may wish to choose a product that does NOT contain either ingredient.
